Pass your 309A or 442A electrician exam

960 practice questions sorted by the sections of the official exams, an explanation for every answer, and a timed exam simulator for the 309A Construction and Maintenance Electrician or 442A Industrial Electrician exam that tells you when you're ready.

30 free questions, no credit card. Works on your phone, tablet or computer, and as an Android app on Google Play.

Built around the real exam

The 442A exam is organized into six sections. The 309A exam covers the same first five, with its own weighting, and has no process control section. Every SparkPrep question belongs to one of them, and the exam simulator draws questions in the same proportions as the official breakdown of the exam you choose, so your practice score reflects the exam you'll actually sit.

  1. Common Occupational Skills
  2. Generating, Distribution and Service Systems
  3. Wiring Systems
  4. Rotating and Fixed Equipment and Controls
  5. Signalling and Communication Systems
  6. Process Control Systems (442A only)

Try two questions

A process transmitter sends out 4 to 20 milliamps. What kind of signal is that?

  1. Discrete
  2. Linear and proportional
  3. S curve
  4. Analog
Show answer

D. Analog. A 4–20 mA transmitter outputs a continuously varying analog current proportional to the measured process variable.

What extinguishing agent should be used on an electrical wiring fire?

  1. CO₂ (carbon dioxide).
  2. Class A dry chemical.
  3. Water.
  4. Smothering material.
Show answer

A. CO₂ (carbon dioxide). CO₂ (carbon dioxide) is the correct extinguishing agent for electrical fires (Class C). CO₂ is non-conductive, so it can be applied directly to energized electrical equipment without creating a shock hazard. Water and foam are electrically conductive and must never be applied to live electrical equipment.
